Best Colours for Staging Bedrooms

February 04, 2013 (posted by Jennifer Campbell, Home Staging Calgary)
Ever wonder why realtors save the showing of bedrooms, particularly the master bedroom, until the end of a home tour? The bedroom is the final pit-stop of our day, the inner sanctuary of the home and one of the most emotionally-resonant rooms of the house. If a prospective buyer enters the master bedroom, and it doesn’t ‘feel’ right, that can be a deal-breaker. That’s why home staging is critical to set the right tone in bedrooms.

So what are the best colours for staging master bedrooms? First, it’s key to understand who the ideal buyer for the property is, then it’s time to zero in on a particular color that will make the bedroom feel like a perfect fit.

See the difference staging makes.

After: The hinds of purple in the bedding, artwork and throw blanket makes this master bedroom feel luxurious and romantic.

Purple For Romance
Cue the boom-chagga-lagga music. Purple bedrooms spell romance. This color combines blue and red in a merging of fire and stability. Long established as the royal color, it also exudes extravagance. We’re not suggesting that the walls and ceiling be covered in purple. This colour is so bold that a touch here and there is all you need: some pillows, a throw, or for the more daring, purple lampshades.

After: The combinations of white and green make this bedroom feel fresh and inviting.

Green For Freshness
For a fresh feeling, use nature’s color of growth. The paler hues of green, such as sage, mint, or moss will offer a subtle hint of freshness and are good for creating a sense of harmony. These are particularly good for master bedrooms of family homes.

After: The blues in the artwork and throw cushion create a sense of tranquiliy and calmness. Blue is also associated with trust and loyalty – the perfect colour for a master bedroom.

Blue For Calm
A calming colour that is reported to slow human metabolism, blue can set a tranquil tone in the bedroom. The paler the shade of blue the more tranquil the feeling that is conveyed.

New Year’s Resolution: Clear Clutter to Invite Prosperity

January 23, 2013 (posted by Jennifer Campbell, Home Staging Calgary)
Does this room look familiar?

Before: Office before staging.

We’re fresh into a new year and that means New Year’s Resolutions. If you’re selling your home this year, it makes sense to add ‘clear clutter’ to your list. It will help when you start staging, and, according to Feng Shui, it will also create space for prosperity to enter.

I’m not a Feng Shui practitioner, but I think the concept of energy flow is interesting. The process is about clearing a path for energy to flow into key areas of your life, including money/abundance.

Too much clutter in your space is said to block the flow of energy – therefore money. Too few items is said to let the energy flow right out because it has nothing to hold it there. When you’re selling your house, why would you want to block prosperity or let it flow right out your door? It’s about balance.

Now, think of it from a potential buyer’s perspective. You can see in the before and after photos of a property I staged in Calgary that clutter – or it’s extreme opposite – has an impact.

How do you feel when you see the clutter (or emptiness) in the pictures? Cramped? Anxious? Unsettled?

After: By removing some of the furniture in this office,
you can now see the beautiful flooring.

How do you feel when you see the uncluttered yet furnished spaces? Light? Like there’s room to breathe?

Which one do you think a buyer would choose? So go ahead and do a thorough de-clutter of every room, but don’t go to the extreme. Use this as an opportunity to decide what’s important to you as you move forward this year. Do you use it? Do you love it? If not, consider letting it go now.

Bedroom Ideas – How to Stage with Personality

November 09, 2012 (posted by Jennifer Campbell, Home Staging Calgary)
Staging your home for sale doesn’t mean that your rooms have to lack personality. Bedrooms are a great place to highlight different themes to help the potential buyer imagine themselves in that space. Ideally, bedroom decorating ideas should reflect the age groups that make up a potential buyer’s family.

Here are some bedroom ideas from Calgary homes that I recently staged:

Note that the common elements in every room are:

  • Clean, tidy, uncluttered, bright – This helps the potential buyer focus on how large the room is and how easy it is to move around, rather than getting distracted by a lot of ‘stuff’.
  • Neutral walls and floors – This helps the potential buyer imagine their own furniture and accessories fitting in the space. While the room has personality, it is not drowning in a theme.
  • Theme accessories are easily removed – Because the personality is created through accessories like textiles and art that highlight the bed as the focal point in the room, the potential buyer wouldn’t have to do any work (like removing wallpaper or painting to cover over strong colours) to make the room feel like their own. Making it easy for the buyer makes it easier for you to sell.

Add some personality to bedrooms to keep a house from feeling too sterile when you are staging it for sale. There are endless bedroom ideas that can be effective, as long as you keep your potential buyer in mind.
