Dressing Shelves

May 15, 2013 (posted by Jennifer Campbell, Home Staging Calgary)
When potential buyers view your property for sale, you want them to feel like there’s plenty of room for all of their “stuff”. Regardless of the size of your home, the way you stage your shelves, cupboards, and other storage areas can help to create that feeling.

Yes, the potential buyer will look! So, less is more when you’re creating a feeling of spaciousness. Don’t feel the need to fill every space. Instead, be strategic.

  • Leave gaps: Clear clutter and don’t overload. In the photo you can see how your own books and office supplies could fit in the shelves. Same goes for drawers. No overflowing allowed! Stuffed drawers and cabinets create the perception that there isn’t enough storage space in the house.
  • Establish balance and flow: Use colour, texture, height, and spacing. Group similar items. Display in three’s. Stick with one or two key colours. Place taller items next to shorter items to create a natural flow for where the eye will naturally be drawn. For example, notice the zigzag pattern created in the photo.
  • Create contrast: Even subtle differences in colour draw the eye. In the photo, neutral walls contrast with the white shelving unit to create dimension and help items to pop.
  • Combine practical with pretty: Display practical items suitable for the location and then add something attractive (maybe even whimsical) to the mix. This could even be something simple and natural, like a plant in a decorative pot.
